Jim Perkins' 2025 Summer Reading List

ree

Welcome to my 2025 Summer Reading List! As some of you know, I tend to read almost everything – from books and cereal boxes to newsletters and anything else that’s put in front of me. This year, I thought I would compile a list of what I have recently read, what is of interest to me, and some books that have been recommended but I haven’t quite gotten to yet. If you ever want to discuss any of these, just give me a call! Happy reading.

Recent Reads:

  1. The Rise of Germany, 1939-41 by James Holland

    • A detailed account of the early years of World War II, focusing on Germany's military campaigns and strategies. Those who do not remember are doomed to repeat the same mistakes.

  2. The Allies Strike Back, 1941-1943 by James Holland

    • Continuing from the previous book, this volume covers the period when the Allies began to turn the tide against the Axis powers.

  3. My Effin Life by Geddy Lee

    • An autobiography by the lead vocalist and bassist of the rock band Rush, offering insights into his life and career. Loved this band in high school and Geddy's stories about his Jewish upbring and his parents time in the concentration camps is eye opening.

  4. Chaos by Tom O’Neill

    • An investigation into the Manson Family murders and the possible connections to the CIA's MKUltra program. Read this after reading Operation Paper Clip and Area 51. You will never trust the government again.

  5. Dune and Dune Messiah by Frank Herbert

    • Classic science fiction novels that explore themes of politics, religion, and power in a distant future. Read and then watch the movie again.

  6. The House Maid by Freida McFadden

    • A psychological thriller about a maid who discovers dark secrets about her employer. Mindless fun with several twists.

  7. Mrs. Poe by Lynn Cullen

    • A historical novel that imagines a love affair between Edgar Allan Poe and poet Frances Osgood. Good for the pool.

  8. The Splendid and the Vile by Erik Larson

    • A gripping account of Winston Churchill's leadership during the Blitz in World War II. That guy was a rock star.

  9. The Demon of Unrest by Erik Larson

    • Another fascinating historical narrative by Erik Larson, delving into lesser-known events and figures at the beginning of the Civil War. With the division in the US today a timely read.

  10. The Magnificent Lives of Marjorie Post by Allison Pataki

    • A novel based on the life of Marjorie Merriweather Post, a pioneering businesswoman and philanthropist. The daughter of the creator of Post cereal, from Kalamazoo MI, ends up being a sought-after socialite, gets married multiple times to the 'love of her life', and then builds Mara Lago.

  11. Medieval Myths and Mysteries by Dorsey Armstrong and The Great Courses

    • An exploration of medieval myths and legends, examining their origins and cultural significance. Who knew King Arthur was made up?

  12. Lego by Jens Andersen

    • A comprehensive history of the iconic toy company and its impact on popular culture. A good read about my favorite childhood toy and a cautionary tale of working with family.

On the Nightstand to be Attacked Soon:

  1. Project MKUltra by Charles Rivers Editors

    • A detailed look into the CIA's controversial mind control experiments during the Cold War.

  2. Cassino ’44 by James Holland

    • An account of the Battle of Monte Cassino, one of the most brutal and pivotal battles of World War II.

  3. Oath and Honor by Liz Cheney

    • A memoir by the former U.S. Representative, reflecting on her career and political battles.

  4. Killing Jesus by Bill O’Reilly

    • A historical account of the events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

  5. The Silk Roads by Peter Frankopan

    • A new history of the world, focusing on the importance of the Silk Roads in shaping global history.

  6. SPQR by Mary Beard

    • A comprehensive history of ancient Rome, exploring its rise and fall through the lens of its citizens.

I hope you find this list as exciting and enriching as I do. Happy reading, and feel free to reach out if you want to discuss any of these books!
